1957. It is a time of hope and sincere belief that the future will undoubtedly be bright. The Soviet satellite sends clear signals to the world as if saying: "We are here, and we will go even further and higher."
On the earth, in a little sea port, the bright beaming eyes of Konyok and Lara - a simple-hearted restaurant cook and his waitress girlfriend - follow with delight the movement of a satellite above. Their simple romance is broken up by appearance of a mysterious stranger who knows with utter certainty that you cannot run away from this country otherwise than by flying or swimming.
Konyok meets Gherman, who is to become his mysterious friend and rival, in a boxing ring. Punches, blood, and cut lips mark the beginning of the strange relationship of the two young men - one provincial and naïve, the other - a cynical newcomer who knows the world.
All around them there flows the life of a border sea port. Huge foreign vessels arrive with unfamiliar sounds, tastes and smells that are both frightening and alluring. But for a Soviet man it seems sinful even to imagine that somewhere there exists a kind of life and a kind of freedom different from those they have in the Soviet Union.
Gherman cracks open a door for Konyok to a different world, a world full of foreign "voices", painstaking physical training, and secret state missions. He cracks it open but doesn't let him in; he shows but doesn't let him understand. What is Gherman getting ready for? Why is he struggling to learn English by rote? Why does he torture himself with swims in the ice-cold sea?
Everything that Gherman does is incomprehensible and oddly disturbing. And Lara gives in to his wicked charm. After losing Lara, Konyok finds Lara's sister Rima who takes Lara’s place. Jealousy, passion and sex - they are all unusual, strong and very beautiful here.
Each of the characters anticipates that something amazing and important, something totally unlike the present life is in store for them. One will be carried towards his goal by black, cold waves while the other - by a homely and comfortable Moscow train. One will come face to face with emptiness and silence, the other with Yuri Gagarin. Neither the characters, nor the viewers will fail to experience anticipation, anticipation of space exploration.
