In Troms, Swedish cops aid the Norwegian police in hunting for the murderer of a girl, 15. They track a suspect; in the fog near the sea he seems to escape, wounding one policeman. One of the Swedes, Jonas Engström, fires his revolver, accidentally killing his partner. He then tries to cover it up. Over the next several days, the sleepless Engström manipulates the evidence of his partner's death more and more elaborately as he and others pursue the girl's killer. Then, he hears from the killer, who has observed him shoot his partner. Is a net closing in on Engström? Will someone police the police?

Quote:

In the atmospheric Norwegian thriller "Insomnia," two taciturn detectives arrive in midnight-sun territory to investigate a murder in a remote setting. Fog and endless daylight in northern Norway serve to heighten tensions that already run deep.

Early in the film, a taut debut feature directed by Erik Skjoldbjaerg, the investigator Jonas Engstrom (Stellan Skarsgard, of "Breaking the Waves" and "Good Will Hunting') becomes complicit in the crime in ways he could not have anticipated, and his discreet paranoia sets the tone for the rest of this enveloping story. Engstrom makes a grievous misstep and spends the rest of the film trying to protect his secret.

Though "Insomnia" has the makings of a standard police procedural tale, beginning with the killing of a beautiful young woman named Tanja (Maria Mathiesen), it has the style of a more unnerving psychological thriller. As written concisely by Nikolaj Frobenius, it contrasts the standard crime investigation with Engstrom's private nightmare, which is made that much more disturbing by his stony, guarded demeanor and furtive worries.

Cold sweat is the mode here as Engstrom strains to allay his colleagues' suspicions and to keep up an air of professional detachment from a second killing. Early on, spooked by the peculiar, eerie climate in which the story unfolds, Engstrom has accidentally shot into the fog and killed his own partner, Erik Vik (Sverre Anker Ousdal).

In a subtly unsettling film that rarely stops to spell out its plot developments, Engstrom comes under close scrutiny from a female colleague (Maria Bonnevie) whose intuition becomes one of the biggest threats to his safety. He also connects much too closely with various suspects in the case, from a pretty young contemporary of the dead Tanja (Marianne O. Ulrichsen) to a middle-aged writer who feels an unwelcome fellowship with Engstrom. "Sometimes one has to alter the truth a bit," this writer tells him mockingly. "An author understands that."

Skarsgard's performance as a man pushed to the breaking point gives the film its share of Hitchcockian undercurrents. And Skjold-bjaerg's understated, elliptical direction keeps the material dangerous and volatile, with frequent small touches of the unexpected as Engstrom shows increasing signs of strain.

Northern Norway, an evocatively forbidding backdrop for the story, is a major factor in the film's unusual moodiness, presenting an outward visual manifestation of the chilly mysteries that lurk within.
