NOTES
This is an excellent action-packed comic strip like spaghetti western. The obvious inspiration comes from Zatoichi. This time a blindman, portrayed by Tony Anthony, is not looking for revenge, but to deliver 50 mail brides to the miners in Texas like he promised. At the start of the movie he has been double-crossed by his partners who sold the brides to Mexico. Blindman has no choice but to go to Mexico to find the brides and bring them back.
Of course the task is not that easy. The girls have been sold to Mexican crimelord Domingo (Lloyd Battista) whose sister (Magda Konopka), who's just known as Sweet Mama (what a good name for her) and brother Candy, who's portrayed by Ringo Starr in his first role after the Beatle years, are also standing in Blindman's way. Blindman has to use every trick in the book to get the brides back from Domingo. Some of the actresses playing the brides include familiar eurobabes from Malisa Longo and Solvi Stubing to Shirley Corrigan and Janine Reynaud. Agneta Eckemyr plays Pilar who Ringo Starr falls in love with. Too bad Pilar doesn't respond to the drummer's feelings.
This spaghetti western has made in the 70's, the cinematic era, where everything goes. I must say that this film is quite brutal. Perhaps not as gory as the worst (or best) of them, but violent as hell nonetheless. Blindman has to endure everything from being tortured to being beaten up and shot at. The brides have even worse things coming at their way. They've treated like live stock: washed in one big room just by throwing buckets of water at them, beaten up, raped and otherwise indignified. Especially one scene brings to mind, but I won't give it away. You need to watch the film. Naturally since this is a western, there is plenty of shootouts, but also a good amount of explosions. Blindman is extremely handy with dynamite. These are the few reasons why I decided to add 'exploitation' as the second genre for this movie. This is for the fans of spaghetti westerns, but also fans of grindhouse cinema.
