Quote:
Killer Kid (Steffen) is a gunslinger and escapee from Fort Knox with a $5,000 bounty on his head. He encounters an operation smuggling American guns to Mexican revolutionaries and falls in with them and their leader The Saint. His presence is begrudged by thuggish and larcenous rebel Vilar (Sancho). He begins a friendship with Mercedes (Luisa Baratto), a beautiful revolutionary. It would seem that this cold-hearted killer is developing a conscience as he witnesses the struggles of the people and the brutal oppression of the government troops, personified by a sadistic Army officer Ramirez (Ken Wood) who pursues The Saint, but of course gringos always have a hidden agenda.
Sounds a bit like A Bullet For The General right? It's not up to that standard except maybe in body-count, I don't think I've ever seen as many Mexican peasants lined up in front of firing squads, and the leftist politics of the Zapatista Western are more of a genre trope here than an inspiration for wit and dry allegory as in the best movies of the type. Along with the director, Leopoldo Savona, it was written by Sergio Garrone who had a knack for dark, violent Spaghetti Westerns like Noose for Django, Django the Bastard, No Graves on Boot Hill and If You Want to Live Shoot. The action scenes are good, and the cinematography is executed in a competent Spaghetti style.
